The first band wasn't worth mr oura, really (--> then what about US?) If not for lester all might have been lost. As amanda said, it's really sad to see a conductor all fired up in front of a dead band. Of course the standard went up as we went along to nearly-godlike, again under mr oura.
Which makes me wonder, if he can make a band like that, why can't we be like that? Why is it that, after three years of teaching, we haven't achieved greatness of that order?
