It was one of those perfect moments.

Nine-thirty, walking down that road. I'd done it a thousand times before, but somehow this time was unique.

It was quiet, the sort of silence that occurs in the stretches between traffic lights, where you can hear the gentle fading hum of the wave that came before. That, and the familiar warm glow of neon streetlamps, casting soft-edged shadows.

As you walk you can hear the crunch of dead leaves underfoot, and I think that contributed to the wonderful smell: the one you get just before a rainstorm, when the air pressure's higher and all the woody odours come out. The only sounds you hear are the thuk-thuk of leather shoes slapping pavement.

And somehow there's this intense feeling of solitude, the kind accompanied by serenity and complete peace. Its just you and the pavement and the streetlamps and the cars that rush by, but somehow this seems more real than anything our world-weary lives can offer.

Its the kind of silence that makes you think.

And then, just then, all I wanted to be was in love.
